BIO

Keith Brown

(Artist)

Keith, is a self-taught artist who was born on February 14, 1957 in Joliet, Illinois and grew up in an area known as “ The Hill “ in Lockport, Illinois.  He graduated from Lockport Township High School in 1975 and retired from the Department of Corrections in 2012.  Keith is now married with one daughter and happily resides in Joliet, Illinois.

At the age of ten Keith noticed his oldest brother drawing a scuba diver and asked his brother how he drew it.  In return, his brother instructed Keith to draw the scuba diver and was amazed at what he saw.  His brother asked him to draw a number of other things and was amazed at Keith’s work at such a young age. From this day forward, Keith knew he had a special talent for drawing.  Like many other children, as a child his favorite things to draw were cars and comic book heroes.

His classmates slowly discovered that he could draw in sixth grade when the teacher posted his art in the hallways at school.  Art class did not interest Keith in high school because he was not fond of being instructed what to draw by the art teacher.  However, he began to take art seriously when he was advised by the art teacher that area high schools were participating in an art contest at the local mall.  Keith entered the contest and his work caught the attention of the attendees.  In addition, one of his high school teacher’s and his wife saw his art at the show and offered to buy it.  He entered two more shows after that and never displayed his work again until June, 2019.

Growing up, Keith did not have access to paint or brushes leading him to his first medium of choice which were pen and markers.  As he matured he tried using paint, but found it to be too messy and was not in favor of having to wait for it to dry.  As markers evolved into paint-like brushes and multiplied in colors, he stayed with his favorite medium which is paint brush markers, ink and colored pencils to express the lives of others through his own eyes.

Keith stopped drawing for twenty-six years while raising his family and continuing his career at the Illinois Department of Corrections.  Following retirement, he was inspired to pick up art again as his hobby.

Footnote: The artists that influenced Keith are Norman Rockwell and Ernie Barnes.
